Reading Festival - Basic Information

Reading Festival is the most popular music festival around. It is organized by Festival Republic on the August bank holiday weekend along with the Leeds Festival, which occurs on the same dates. tickets for Reading festival went on presale sometime back and sold within two days, and more tickets are to go on sale on March 30, 2009. Reading Festival ticket information can be found on the Reading festival website.

The ticket vouchers will be made available on March 30, with actual tickets being given out after August 1st. Once you have a voucher you are confirmed a ticket, but vouchers will only be given after identification is given and this will be matched against that of the person redeeming the voucher for the ticket. Also, only two tickets per person will be sold so make sure you have another person with you if you want to buy more tickets.

No tickets will be sold on the day of the event and on site, so if you want to attend the festival you must get your ticket through HMV before they sell out on March 30. This is all being done to prevent people from buying multiple tickets and selling them at higher prices later on.

The Best Way To Learn Spanish

I get asked this question a lot of times by my readers. What is the best way to learn Spanish? The honest answer is, there is no best way that suits all. Learning Spanish, or any language for that matter needs to be done in a way that suits the learner. Some people have difficulty taking in information from a book, some people have difficulty maintaining attention in a class room and some people just don’t like being schooled from another individual.

If you’re relatively young and used to the classroom / college / school environment then I would advise to enroll in an evening course or weekend course. If you can maintain attention in that environment, it is a great learning method as you have people to interact with. If you can’t maintain attention though, you’ll find it a struggle.

If you just want to understand Spanish and do not particularly want to converse then I recommend reading a simple phrase book to associate yourself with the common words and phrases. I also recommend watching either Spanish movies with English sub titles or poorly dubbed movies in which you can hear both the English and Spanish. These are a fantastic source of learning.

Why is Intercultural Communication important?

The question that is most frequently asked of us via e-mail is what is the point in learning Spanish, or for that matter, any second language? To answer this question, I think that you need to step outside the box and see what learning a second language can offer. It is important to remember that learning how to speak a language, such as Spanish does not just teach you how to speak or how to understand certain words, it also provides a window into the cultures associated with the language.

Intercultural communication is important, especially in the business world. Communication advances over the past two decades have led to more and more individuals from greatly diverse cultures doing business together and as a result, the need to understand and appreciate the others one culture has never been greater. By being able to not just communicate with the other party, but to understand their way of life, their method of doing things and their teachings allows you to do business more effectively.

You will find that lots of corporations these days have offices overseas and at some point, your current position may require communication with your foreign counterparts. Even if they speak your language, by having an insight into their own culture, you will understand why certain things are said and why they go about business in a particular way - things that may be frustrating by someone uneducated in that area.

Learning a second language and understanding cultures other than your own is a key skill sought by many companies. Understanding a way of life other than your own may lead to several opportunities for you personally.

Learning Spanish From The Movies

If you’re anything like me, you’ll do anything to avoid learning a language in Schools, Colleges and Universities. This isn’t because I have anything against them, it’s just that for most of us older students, we feel like we’ve done our time and don’t want to do more! So what can we do? In the past, we’ve touched on online courses and the typical phrase / “Teach Yourself Spanish” books, but what about the other methods?

Well, one method I have found completely fantastic for learning Spanish is English / American movies with Spanish sub-titles. This is a great way to have fun and learn Spanish at the same time. As the actors are speaking, you’ll recognise the Spanish words and phrases being shown and start picking up what words mean in know time. There is of course no substitute for actually holding a conversation yourself in Spanish, but if you’re just looking to understand the language and certain word meanings a little more, this is definitely the option for you!

The Pure Vowels

If there is one thing that always seems to confuse people, especially the English, it’s the pronunciation of the Spanish vowels when used within words. The vowels used in the Spanish language are pure. For those not in the know, this means that you need to pronounce them using a single sound a, e, i, o u where as in English, they are extended and sometimes sound like 2 or more letters together. The vowel pronunciation in Spanish is the same as in Italian, French and German. There are no differences between accentuated vowels and not accentuated vowels.

The vowel set in Spanish makes this language one of the easiest to read and write as the words are pronounced as they are written. I mean sure, there are a few letters in the alphabet which might throw you off a little such as the LL and the before certain vowels, but for the most part, it’s extremely phonetic.

Speaking Out Loud

Learning Spanish can be tough, so we feel that whatever tips we can share must surely help you. One tip that I live by is speaking out loud! This is the single most important thing you can do to help with your Spanish. It might sound obvious, but more and more people are simply reading Spanish phrase books or websites with a view of learning the language but are not doing speaking any of it out loud. I mean sure, this method will suffice for reading Spanish text such as signs etc but you’ll be lost when you need to hold a conversation and don’t know the pronounciation of certain words and even letters. The Spanish language sounds a little different that it is written, particularly to the English / Americans which makes speaking out loud and holding actual conversations a must. We appreciate that not everyone can get to Spain to hold an actual conversation but most schools offer Spanish courses with this option and their are numerous conversation based courses available on the Internet.

Why Speak Spanish?

This question gets asked a lot, exactly what are the advantages in learning Spanish as a second language? It’s a perfectly good question and one I think that should be answered. For me, personally, it was all about impressing my family, as funny as that sounds. I never planned to do business in Spain, nor did I plan to live their or have Spanish friends, but, I did go their on holiday. A lot, a very lot, almost every summer. After learning Spanish for just a few months then next time I went away, Seville I believe it was, I was able to speak to shop keepers and the hotel staff in their native tongue which seriously impressed my family and friends who were away on holiday with us at the time. There is no better way to learn Spanish than to try speaking it in Spain. In the classroom, when you make a mistake, you often forget what that mistake was - but, when you make a mistake speaking to a store owner or someone official, you sure do remember it for a long time. You also get the Spanish tongue down very, very quickly!
